Instagram account disabled
|
My little girl, who's ten and a half, is a rising tennis star, bless her. She has an Instagram account with 1500 followers and has spent a year building up a following from all around the world that includes a few important coaches, two sponsors and even some of the present tournament pros. She's small, quirky, and hits like a lioness which endears her to everyone. On instagram she had a great collection of videos, tournament-win photos and general stuff, and she normally averages 400 views per post - all pretty heady stuff for a youngster but necessary in this day and age if you want to get anywhere. She played in her first international tournament this year in France against 11 and 12 year olds, and raised plenty of eyebrows, so the potential is there.
Anyway, this morning she woke to find her account disabled "for pretending to be someone else". WTF??
We've tried going down the usual channels on the forms offered by Instagram but none of them work - each leads to a dead end where something won't load, or fails to respond - a bizarre way to serve your account holders....there is no way to contact Instagram by e-mail or by phone, you have to go through their forms. We've tried filling the forms in on iPhones, Androids, iPads and so on - none of them let us finish the query. I know Instagram is not a paying service, nor a business, and it's all for free and we should be so lucky to have it, etc etc, and we shouldn't complain.......
Does anyone have any ideas or solutions that might have worked in the past for them? My little girl's heart is crushed at the moment - not just at the loss of the photos if she never gets her account back, but she's concerned about losing her sponsorship too if she can't get the account back up and running.
Before anyone asks, she's a good girl, not a brat, and we go without a bunch of stuff sh she can travel to tournaments and so on. No lottery winners here yet, unfortunately. Oh, and yes, I've wiped my knob on the screen etc etc. Mrs Plankton is commander-in-chief of the tennis department and oversees the account, in case anyone was wondering. And no, she hasn't wiped her knob on the screen.

Maybe the Instagram family have a 10 year old up-and-coming tennis player that feels threatened by your nipper?

I'd recommend she starts tweeting her displeasure (under your guidance). Whenever I have a complaint these days, I tweet the company for all to see. It seems to me the quickest way to ensure a company solves your problem, and bends over backwards to show they're well-meaning. If she tweets some of the biggest tennis stars too, you might be lucky with a retweet, and suddenly thousands have seen your complaint.
As for her photos, Instagram should automatically save any photos to your photo album.
The Internet seems to think best way to get this problem fixed is to go to the Instagram help centre and click 'my account was hacked'.

It is possible to speak to someone at facebook (instagram owners) over the phone- we've had to get in touch with them about an issue with a facebook page through work before. I can't for the life of me remember the number or how we found it though unfortunately.

'all pretty heady stuff for a youngster but necessary in this day and age if you want to get anywhere.'
I'm not sure I understand?
Surely to 'get anywhere' in tennis, she should just carry on getting better at tennis, and leave all that shit to people who just want to be famous?

Re: Instagram account disabled

I'd find out who the owner of Instagram is and send them an email directly.
Probably easy enough to do, as they're normally visable unless a dodgy company.
My mate done it to the owner of Next when they fucked up his mothers day gift and the chap emailed him back directly.

Apologies plankton, Rossal is the site window licker, who clearly didn't bother to read your thread.
I'm told by someone that uses Instagram a lot that they can be contacted via Twitter or Facebook. Try googling that mate to see more specific instructions?

Re: Instagram account disabled

Having a quick look, there is a minimum age to have an instagram acct and she is under this. im assuming they mean she has put a different DOB hence "pretending" to be someone else?

I think the idea of the account is to raise exposure and awareness to hopefully get sponsors etc on board rather than just for the sake of 'being famous'.
I think most tennis players actually view being famous as an annoying but unavoidable circumstance in their quest to become one of the best in the world at their sport.

If penners is right about the age limit, then there's no point in trying.

"Mrs Plankton is commander-in-chief of the tennis department and oversees the account"
I assume that means its ok as she is running it on behalf of her kid, although that's technically "pretending to be someone else".

Re: Instagram account disabled

just found this...
Instagram requires everyone to be at least 13 years old before they can create an account (in some jurisdictions, this age limit may be higher). If your child is younger than 13 and created an account on Instagram, you can show them how to delete their account.

not just at the loss of the photos
If its Iphone there should be a instragram folder of all the uploads. Or the photo would of been picked from the camera roll anyway. You shouldnt lose any photos.

Re: Instagram account disabled

If Plankton's wife is running it on behalf of his daughter that shouldn't be a problem. After talking to them maybe in future things will just have to be written 'about' her rather than as if they were posted by her (assuming that's how it's currently being done)
It does seem a big shame for the girl though, especially when you look at instagram or facebook and see thousands of obvious joke or false accounts which are never shut down. Bit like WHO, really.... :)

Not gutted at all thanks Rossal. The whole 'gutted' thing is a bit childish, it seems to suit you though.

Thanks for the replies, gents
In no particualr order:
Rossal - thanks for that. I didn't find any link to that on the Instagram site nor in the app. She didn't get an e-mail. That would have been ideal.
Penners - you don't have to tell them how old you are when you open an account. I know many of her friends and contemporaries have accounts, and I am sure there are millions worldwide.
Alan - tried that very page and again, everything falls short when you fill in the forms. They simply don't work. As you will have read on that page, no doubt. :)
Trevor - no one in the family has a Twitter account. Facebook is an option but I haven't gone there yet. I have never had a response to a query on an official FB page with a big firm, so don't hold out much hope there. Oh, and after 17 years I have a good idea of who's WHO on here, no worries!
Grumpster - thanx for the suggestions
Eerie - some truth in that, but then you don't get the sponsorship unless you market yourself. She also would not have got the invite to the international tournament this spring if she wasn't making a nuisance of herself. Racquets are the main expense - getting towards €200 a pop every two months, plus a re-string for €40 a time, which tends to happen with alarming regularity now. She breaks a string almost every tournament.....
El Scorchio - thank for the suggestion, can't find a phone number for FB. Do you have one?
di-kezio - good idea but for the fact she is now locked out of her account and had no way to contact anyone - plus no one has Twitter here. We're following up the 'hacked' route, but it again fails when the form needs to be filled in. Their system is broken, full stop, and this seems to be the standard internet truth
Mike - yes, silly but possible. We've seen another account of a friend taken down by someone's complaints.
All good, and thanks a bunch for the feedback.
